How long can you drive with the battery light on?

Every motorist’s nightmare is to be driving a car and suddenly be hit by an unknown warning sign or car malfunction.

But if you’re ever caught by a surprise battery light, don’t panic – you still have some time to salvage the situation.

How long can you drive with the battery light on?

How long your car can survive with the battery light on depends on many factors, including the age and condition of your battery and the type of car you drive.

In general, after the battery light comes on, it takes about 30-60 minutes for the car to stop.

What does the battery light mean?

Simply put, the battery light is a warning that your car battery is running out of juice.

If the car battery dies, the engine will not start and the battery needs to be charged – which you can do by either using a charger or jumpering the car to another car.

As soon as you get the motor running, it generates electricity that goes into the battery and recharges it.

But if you use the battery without the engine running, it will eventually run out of power. In this case, the battery must be charged to start the engine.

How do you know if it’s the battery or the alternator?

The two are linked, and when the car battery dies, it can be a sign that the alternator is failing.

This is because the alternator charges the battery while driving. So if it stops working, your battery will run out pretty quickly.

Some of the most common symptoms of a bad alternator are when your car stalls or is difficult to start, when the headlights or dashboard are flickering or dim, when the car starts making strange noises – or the battery light comes on.
