And Her Majesty is said to have been in tears just before her balcony appearance to mark the conclusion of her platinum anniversary last Sunday.

A source told the Mail on Sunday: “The Queen only decided to go to London about three hours before the balcony performance.

“She wasn’t feeling great but the Prince of Wales called her and told her to really come if she could.

“He told her that so many people were dying to see her and he convinced her to come.

“The Queen was absolutely blown away by the amount of people waiting to see her – she had tears in her eyes before stepping onto the balcony.”

Princes Charles and William had agreed on the carefully choreographed moments when the Queen, 96, was seen with the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and his eldest son George, eight.

The image showed the next three generations who will succeed her and may be the last time all four generations are seen together.

Following the celebrations, Her Majesty wrote in a message of thanks: “While I may not have attended each event in person, my heart was with you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family.”

She missed several events, including the concert and pageant during the anniversary, sparking health fears.

And Kate Middleton had said she was “fine” but found the first day very exhausting.

The Queen beamed as she joined her family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on the first day of the celebrations.

But hours later, officials confirmed she would miss a thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral after feeling unwell.

She nonetheless beamed to light the Platinum Jubilee bonfire, which lit 3,300 blazes across the UK that same evening.

She also paid tribute to her late husband Prince Philip at the celebrations.
