Hillarys Yacht Club is hosting the final ocean race of its winter 2022 series

After previous postponements of races due to stormy weather, Hillarys Yacht Club held the final race of its Winter Series on Sunday.

Saturday’s rain and strong winds gave way to a light easterly wind and drizzle on Sunday. Even the sun was shining and the wind turned southeast and picked up to about eight knots.

In Division 1, Perle started handicapped first and carried the asymmetric spinnaker to the first mark and wasn’t in the lead after that, before finishing ahead of Adam’s Rib (Rob Giraudo and Bob Mason) and the fast finishing Whispering Jack (Bruce Bradford). came.

Kevin Meta, one of four co-owners, led Volant to first and fastest in Division 2 while just 12 seconds separated second from fourth. In second place was Show Me (Tim Tucker) just four seconds ahead of Farrouk (Des and Gail Riley) and Not Negotiable (Greg Hill) another eight seconds back. These close placings determined the places in the series.

The Division 3 fleet of eight sailed their own course and rounded the cans in fairly short time, and yet bottom-placed La Premiere (Gary and Julie Beeck) managed to pass everyone to win with a minute to go. The rest came about a minute apart, with second place going to new boat Kind of Blue (well done Boyd Timler) and Resolute (Damian and Kerry Martin) third.

Adam’s Rib topped the Division 1 rankings all winter, winning the Winter Series ahead of Perle and Whispering Jack.

Volant was too good for Not Negotiable in Division 2 and was a clear winner of the series. However, third place was decided by a countback with Show Me ahead of Farrouk, a result of being four seconds down in that final race.

The points difference between first and second in all three divisions was four and in Division 3 it was Intuition (Marc Carpenter) ahead of La Premiere and Resolute just a point behind.

Thank you to everyone who helped out in the launch tower over the series. Your support is greatly appreciated and without you there would be no races.

A break of now five weeks will be enough to skid the boat, antifoul the hull and prepare for the Commodore’s Cup on opening day Saturday 8th October.
