A celestial spectacle comes over a good part of the earth when a total lunar eclipse occurs on the night of May 15/early morning of May 16. She is evocatively known as the “blood moon” because of the way the moon takes on a subtle hue of red during the event.
The May full moon is sometimes called the floral moon because it coincides with spring in North America, so feel free to call it a “floral blood moon” or “blood flower moon” for added pizzazz.
What is a lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth moves between the sun and the moon, casting its planetary shadow over our natural satellite. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned just right so that our planet’s shadow completely covers the Moon. Then it usually turns dark red.
Cash. Lunar eclipses can easily be seen with the naked eye.
Check your location and time
The eclipse won’t be visible from anywhere in the world, so you’ll need a combination of the right place, time, and weather to experience it in person. Most of the Americas, Europe and Africa will be able to see some of the action. NASA’s visibility map highlights the best vantage points.
You can find your local time by visiting the Timeanddate Eclipse page. For example, the time of the maximum solar eclipse for me on Sunday, May 15 in New Mexico will be around 10:00 p.m. local time, so I want to be sure to be outside to catch the view.
Watch a lunar eclipse live stream
Don’t let location or clouds get in the way of your moon festivals. The wide viewing area for the eclipse means there should be an abundance of live streams. NASA and Timeandate.com are in for a start. I’ll be adding more notable livestream options as they become available.
NASA TV is scheduled to begin live coverage Sunday, May 15 at 8pm PT.
Timeanddate’s coverage begins at 7 p.m. PT.
A lunar eclipse can be a subtle and sublime experience as the moon is gently shadowed before blushing with hints of red. We’re hoping for clear skies and a nice moon-watching night.
