Admission fees are waived in celebration of National Public Lands Day.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Late afternoon sun sparks a rainbow during a brief rain shower at Devils Garden campground in Arches National Park May 19, 2013. Admission to the park is free on Saturday 24 September 2022.

On Saturday, visitors have free entry to Arches, Canyonlands, Zion, Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks.

The National Parks Service is waiving admission fees on September 24 in celebration of National Public Lands Day, one of five days of free admission in 2022. Entrance fees to all five national parks in Utah are typically $20 or more per car.

National Public Lands Day falls on the fourth Saturday in September each year. It’s a day when volunteers work to beautify green spaces ranging from city parks to national parks. Find a service project near you by going to NEEFUSA.org/NPLD/volunteers.

Arches’ timed entry system, put in place to manage traffic, will still be in effect on Saturday; Visitors simply do not have to pay admission after making a reservation. Except for Saturday, visitors must purchase a ticket to enter the park by Oct. 3, according to NPS.gov.

Permits are now required in Zion National Park to make the strenuous hike to Angels Landing to control foot traffic along the way. The lottery for permits for the next day opens at 12:01 am and closes at 3:00 pm each day, and it costs $6 to apply for a permit. People who get a permit on Saturday must still pay $3 per person for the hike.

To see Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef in the same day, take the Highway 12 Scenic Byway. The drive features a national park at each end, interspersed with scenic spots like Kodachrome Basin and Anasazi State Parks.

The next day of free entry to the national park is November 11, Veterans Day.
