Heavy snowfall in Midwest slows travel, closes schools

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Heavy snow fell Friday across a large swath of the Midwest, where travel conditions deteriorated and many schools closed or switched to online instruction.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for areas of Minnesota, the Dakotas, Iowa and Illinois, where forecasters forecast up to 10 inches of snow.

The weather service said on Twitter: “This snow will combine with gusts to create slippery roads, snow cover and significantly reduced visibility. “Sometimes it becomes dangerous and dangerous to travel.”

Forecasters said the fast-moving storm could make travel difficult through parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest into the Mid-Mississippi Valley through Saturday morning.

In Minnesota, areas north and west of the Twin Cities are under a Winter Storm Warning for Friday. In Twin Cities, where less snow is expected, there is a Winter Weather Notice, according to the Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service.

Several southern states along with parts of the Northeast have braced for the possibility of snow and ice over the weekend.

In the Midwest, Southwest Airlines warned of possible cancellations, diversions and delays on Friday and Saturday at airports in St. Louis, Twin Cities, Kansas, Des Moines, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska.

The weather service in Des Moines said: “Snow periods of likely 14 to 20 hours in most locations will allow for widespread accumulation over 4 inches and some locations to exceed 8 inches or more. up,” said the weather service in Des Moines.

Motorists on Interstate 94 near Bismarck and Mandan, North Dakota reported heavy ice and snow, with driving speeds Friday morning dropping to about 45 mph or slower .
