‘He will be better than Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher’: Former F1 driver advises Max Verstappen to be the all-time great

Johnny Herbert believes Max Verstappen will surpass the legacy of Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher in the sport.

Verstappen made his F1 debut at the age of 17, becoming the youngest driver ever to participate in a Grand Prix. Since his first outing, he has been billed as a potential World Champion and last Sunday he lived up to it.

Max made history by becoming the first Dutch driver to win the World Championship. He overcame title rival Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi GP and took home the title.

Hamilton is one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time. The British have won 7 world championships and have the most race championships in history. However, former Lotus driver Johnny Herbert feels that Verstappen must of course replace Hamilton to be the best on the grid.

β€œHe (Verstappen) will be better than Lewis, and Lewis is better than Michael, in my opinion. It’s just another evolution of the driving skill set. ” Sky Sports announcer said.

β€œThat’s what Max gives me. He stimulates me. He gives me visual stimulation when I’m watching TV or I’m at the racetrack.”

β€œMax Verstappen is a young driver with a lot of experience”

At the 2016 Spanish GP, Verstappen became the youngest driver ever to win an F1 race. He did so at the age of 18, a record that still stands today. At the age of 24, Verstappen already has 7 years of F1 experience.

β€œI still feel Lewis has the edge at the moment, but it won’t be long before that happens. Verstappen is still young and has a lot of experience to follow his path.” Herbert continued.

β€œAnd he will be better than Lewis, but not for me. Not quite yet, but it’s not far off! He will push himself massively to finish the championship and, if he gets there this year, it will be the switch button done. “

Herbert went on to say that despite being an extremely talented racer, Verstappen’s antics on the track could limit his potential. The Dutch driver has been accused by Hamilton, among many others, of being a racer.

β€œIt has a bit of an unpleasant taste in the mouth. I think it just shows what Max is willing to do to try and win this world championship.”

“I agree with Lewis – I love Max for what he does on the track – but he really goes overboard, and sometimes he pushes it too much,” he concluded.
