A woman has gone missing after she and her husband apparently encountered a shark while snorkeling in Hawaii.

The woman’s husband said they were snorkeling about 50 yards offshore in South Maui when he repeatedly saw a shark pass them, Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources spokesman Dan Dennison said.

Both fought off the shark, the man told police, according to Hawaii News Now. He made it to shore, but his wife didn’t.

The man, who was not named, called 911 around noon Thursday to report his missing wife.

Parts of her bathing suit and a snorkel set were later found.

First responders dispatched to Keawakapu Point searched for her in the water and from the air, Dennison said. They tried, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, “to consider all those who might be involved”.

“The Maui Fire Department has multiple firefighters on skis and divers and MFD Air 1, and U.S. Coast Guard aircraft are conducting aerial searches,” the department said. “The MFD lifeboat also intervenes.”

Search efforts continued through Thursday night and into Friday.

“They haven’t sighted anyone in the water at this point,” Dennison said.

After the man’s call, there were no reports of a shark sighting in the area. However, shark sighting signs have been posted on the beach and people have been asked not to swim.

The woman’s identity was not released. Shark incident guidelines prevent authorities from sharing details about potential victims, Dennison said.

“Once we have this information, we will release it to the media,” he said.

A beachgoer and visitor, Peter Gannon, was startled by the incident.

“I mean, the scary part is that at this stage, a person is just completely missing,” Gannon told Hawaii News Now.
