Harry Maguire believes Erik ten Hag will bring ‘positive energy’ Manchester United and results simply need to improve after a season to forget under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

Ten Hag has a huge task ahead of him as he tries to rebuild United from a low point where they finished sixth, failed to pick up silverware and played seriously dour football in the process.

The new manager will oversee many personnel changes over the summer and Maguire says all the players involved early in the season are sure to impress and hopes a new, more positive vibe will surround the club.

“It was a tough season, you can’t hide from that,” said Maguire ahead of Saturday’s English Nations League game in Hungary. “It’s been a disappointing season, individually and as a group.

“Football is my life. The club is very important to me. It’s important to me to win games and get the club where it should be, where the fans deserve it. I’m sure on the first day of pre-season everyone will be buzzing around, doing their best to impress and get back in shape. We have a big season ahead of us.

“We know we will improve because last season wasn’t nearly good enough. The new manager will bring positive energy and the boys will follow suit.”

Maguire is on duty in England, where he has also endured a tough season, reaching a low point when he was booed by Three Lions fans during a clash against Ivory Coast in March.

The centre-back admits he was surprised by the insults but is mature enough not to let it get him down.

“If that had happened earlier in my career, I would have struggled that night,” he said.

“There have been guys who made their debut in this game and when they hear that it probably affects them too after seeing what I’ve done for my country over the past five years.

“That’s why it was disappointing. We talked about it as a group. It happened in the past, I don’t want it to happen in the future.

“I’ve been through ups and downs as Manchester United captain. I know the test, I know the pressure and I’ve learned to deal with it.

‘I was surprised. Instead of accepting it, I was a bit shocked.
