The royal racing spree has escalated as a bombshell trailer for Harry and Meghan’s £88million Netflix documentary has been leaked online.
It came the day after Prince William’s godmother resigned as palace assistant after she asked a black British charity boss where she was “really” from.
The 60-second teaser hinted at more damaging claims after they told US TV presenter Oprah Winfrey last year that there were “concerns and talks” in the royal family about how dark their then-unborn son Archie’s skin might be .
“I had to do everything I could to protect my family,” the Duke of Sussex says in the promo, as piano music plays and images of Meghan appear, holding her head and wiping away tears.
“No one sees what goes on behind closed doors,” Harry adds. Meghan says, “When the stakes are so high, doesn’t it make sense to hear our story from us?”
Scenes are punctuated with petrified images including William and Kate – whose visit to the US to promote their Earthshot charity was overshadowed by the palace racing series.
The Prince and Princess of Wales even had to endure a sermon on racism from an African-American pastor at one event. “On this day I invite all of us to reflect on the legacy of colonialism and racism,” said Rev. Mariama White-Hammond.
“The lost stories, the extinct species, but also the perseverance of people in the face of oppression and the fundamental dignity of all our relationships.”
The couple were met with boos at a basketball game in Boston on their first trip abroad since the Queen’s death when news of the scandal broke in the US media.
They were still over the Atlantic when William issued a statement condemning the words of Lady Susan Hussey at a reception at Buckingham Palace for groups opposed to violence against women and that of Camilla, the Queen Consort on Tuesday , was held.
The late Queen’s lady-in-waiting had approached Ngozi Fulani, the head of a Hackney-based domestic violence charity, and repeatedly asked “where are you from?”.
Ms Fulani told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “It was like an interrogation. I really have to wonder how this can happen in a space designed to protect women from all forms of violence. Although it’s not physical violence – it’s abuse.”
Ms Fulani denied claims by the palace – which were repeated last night – that he reached her afterwards.
And she dismissed suggestions that Lady Susan’s age, 83, might be a mitigating factor.
“Let’s be clear what that is,” she said. “I’ve heard so many suggestions that it’s about her age and things like that and I think that’s a kind of disrespect – an ageism.
“I am very proud of my African heritage. It’s like the Windrush thing to me. You’re trying to make me unwelcome in my own space.”
Nazir Afzal, a former chief prosecutor, said Lady Susan asked him the same question, tweeting: “She only asked me once about my background and seemed to accept my answer – currently Manchester”. He added: “Racism is never very far away.”
Prince William’s statement said: “Racism has no place in our society” and added: “The comments were unacceptable and it is right that the individual has resigned with immediate effect.”
Buckingham Palace insisted it took the incident “extremely seriously” as Lady Susan was quickly sacked after 62 years in the job. “In this case, unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments have been made,” she added.
“All members of the household are reminded of the diversity and inclusivity guidelines they must adhere to at all times.” William has not seen Harry since her grandmother’s funeral in September. They will probably not meet on the US trip.
William and Kate later received a warmer welcome when they visited an air conditioning technology company in Boston, Massachusetts, and received a bouquet from Henry Dynov-Teixeira, eight, dressed as the Grenadier Guard.
The couple can be seen in the Netflix trailer with Harry and Meghan attending a 2019 Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey. Viewers seemed to take their side as they criticized the Sussexes.
“My favorite part is her crying in front of her Hermes blanket,” said one YouTube user, with another adding that it’s worth more than her salary.
“You can’t tell me they didn’t plan to release this the week William and Kate arrive in the US,” said another. While another pointed out, “I’ve never seen such a public attempt at privacy.”
