BOSTON (WHDH) — A group of pro-life and pro-choice protesters rallied at the State House on Mother’s Day after a draft Supreme Court opinion, the Roe v. Wade would pick up was leaked.
People on both sides of the issue have gathered outside Beacon Hill since the news broke last week – all trying to ensure their voices are heard in Washington DC ahead of what could be a pivotal week.
Boston police say a 25-year-old from Allston was arrested during a tense moment at the protest. The suspect, whose name has not been released, faces an attack on charges of dangerous weapons. However, police said this is likely downgraded to a simple assault as no contact was made.
“The best way to make a choice in this world is through mass movements, mobilizing and fighting for a better world for the people,” said protester Stevie Downie. “Many of these politicians will often act as if they have your best interests at heart and they turn around and break their promises.”
In Massachusetts, a 2020 law codified Bay State abortion rights, but this is not the case in all states. Democrats said they plan to bring legislation into the Senate this week that would codify abortion laws nationwide.
“This is the real deal and all eyes are on her,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
In the evenly divided Senate, the bill known as the Women’s Health Protection Act would need the support of at least 10 Republican senators if all Democrats are in favour. Schumer said the vote is critical at this point.
“We need this vote,” he said. “Every senator has to show where he or she stands and on something important like this. We won’t hide anyone because America is on our side.
Across the aisle, Senator Lindsey Graham is one of many speaking out in hopes that the nation’s highest court Roe v. Wade will fall.
If the Supreme Court overturns the landmark decision, all 22 states in red would ban abortion. The states in yellow are likely to ban abortion.
