Grizzlies star Ja Morant doubtful for rest of NBA playoffs

MEMPHIS, Tennessee. – Memphis All-Star Guard Ja Morant is in doubt for the remainder of the NBA postseason after an MRI and further tests revealed a bone contusion in his injured right knee.

The Grizzlies said they expect him to make a full recovery.

The NBA’s most improved player averaged 38.3 points per game in the Grizzlies Western Conference semifinals against Golden State. But he sat out Monday’s 101-98 loss in Game 4 with what the team described at the time as a sore knee.

The Grizzlies lead the series 3-1 with Game 5 scheduled for Wednesday night in Memphis.

Morant injured his knee again in a game with the Warriors’ Jordan Poole, which the teams discussed during the Grizzlies’ 142-112 Game 3 loss.

Morant hobbled away 6:19 of the game after Poole grabbed his knee in a play the Warriors guard described as a simple attempt to strip the ball.

Afterward, Morant posted and deleted a video of the game on his Twitter feed with the words “broke the code,” a reference Warriors coach Steve Kerr used five days earlier when Dillon Brooks hard fouled out Game 2 Gary Payton II .

Kerr missed Game 4 after testing positive for COVID-19 and being placed under the league’s health and safety protocols. He stayed home in the Bay Area on Tuesday and did not travel to Memphis with the team. Associate Head Coach Mike Brown will coach Game 5 as scheduled.

Warriors spokesman Raymond Ridder said via text message Tuesday that the Warriors had no new cases of COVID-19.
