Grimes wants to be “less approachable,” she explained on Twitter

Grimes has long been an independent thinker, and lately she seems to have spent more time thinking about big ideas than making music (the latter of which is a “side hustle” at this point in her life). Explaining this recently, she said she doesn’t want “the attention that an album brings,” which ties in with another thought she just shared about how she’s trying to make herself “less approachable.”

In a tweet shared yesterday (March 8), Grimes wrote: “A/ac (aligned acceleration)? (Other ideas?) How can I convince you to track *all* pillars of acceleration x at once and improve alignment research 1000x? (Requesting mentats) (literally)”, where β€œmentats” perhaps refers to the element from the Stand out Video games that increase mental abilities.

In response, one fan wrote: “You talk about your target audience. Try to be normal, it’s not such a bad concept.” To which Grimes replied, “I don’t have an audience. A large audience is counterproductive and I’m intentionally trying to make myself infinitely more unapproachable. I always add the art for people who don’t care about the tweet because totally wasting people’s time is wrong.”

Another user replied, “Grimes hopes you don’t mind a suggestion, if you want to get your fans on the AI hype train, give them the context they need to understand the AI stuff.” Grimes replied : “Not sure if I should delete this yet? Unsure if a large audience is helpful or harmful? I enjoy making ideas bigger, but being exposed to music stan culture without warning can be traumatic for people, haha.”

What Grimes means by “alignment,” she wrote in another tweet: “I define alignment as ‘a better understanding of what’s going on in the computer mind, or a better understanding of how to tweak it, so as not to shorten the lifespan of bioconsciousness shortening early’ – I think it’s worth discussing ways this could potentially happen faster or improve synchronization during development.”
