MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Florida. – During Friday night’s prayer, dozens stood by Sonya Stevenson, who is mourning the death of her 17-year-old son Mekhi in Miami-Dade County. Her 15-year-old son witnessed the fatal shooting.
Just days after a 15-year-old boy pulled out a loaded gun and shot him in the chest, there was a balloon deflation in his memory while the boys were at home near Sierra Park, 19601 NE 1 Pl on Tuesday afternoon .
“I worry every night. I haven’t slept for days. I haven’t eaten or done anything in days because all I can think about is my child dying,” Stevenson said through tears.
Mekhi was a former student at North Miami High School who played for the school’s football team, according to Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Trainer Gerald Cox said the 6-foot, 175-pound junior was a talent quarterback.
The balloons were green and gray. Those were the colors of the high school football team uniform that he wore with pride.
“I don’t know how to live without my kid,” Stevenson said during the vigil.
The 15-year-old boy who shot Mekhi remained in juvenile detention on Friday after police arrested him on manslaughter charges. His next hearing is on December 20th. Prosecutors have yet to decide whether to charge him as an adult.
“I know children, they get curious. Especially teenagers, so I didn’t have a gun at home,” Stevenson said.
She had a message for parents to prevent further tragedy: “If you have a gun in the house, lock it away.”
Relatives said preparations for Mekhi’s funeral service next week are underway.
