Green Line service between Kenmore and Government Center resumes after wire fall, causing sparks on Park Street – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) – Rail service has resumed for a portion of the Green Line after fallen cables caused sparks and smoke at the Park Street station, prompting an emergency response and a switch to shuttle buses on Sunday.

A video shot by a local photographer, Arthur Mansavage, captured some of the sparks that went off, which soon had people running to the platform.

“When it was (sparking) again (and bigger) when the workers at the station started yelling at people to get off,” Mansavage told 7NEWS. “And then when it happened, like a third time, quickly, then I think maybe there were also some police officers yelling to evacuate the whole station.”

Mansavage said he was able to hide behind a railing and avoid being trampled as passengers fled the platform. As an Emerson College student, he said Sunday was only his third ride on the train since coming to the Boston area.

MBTA officials said the overhead wire on the westbound Green Line route at Park Station came down around 3 p.m. producing smoke but no fire. According to a spokesman, no injuries were reported.

Temporary shuttles picked up Green Line riders while the MBTA Energy Department made repairs. Train passengers-turned-shuttle drivers filled the sidewalks of Tremont Street in the early evening hours, waiting for the buses to arrive.

“It’s time consuming and we have to plan our route with buffer times for all of this,” said Rutuja Dhanawade, who spoke to 7NEWS while waiting for a shuttle. “Now, since about last month, there’s been a lot of problems with the Green Line, so it’s causing us problems. We hope it will be resolved quickly.”

During the repairs, Park Street remained open to Red Line customers.

Around 9 p.m., MBTA sent out a notification that work was complete and service between Kenmore and Government Center was resuming. Drivers have been asked to expect residual delays of up to 20 minutes when the service returns to normal.
