EAST LANSING, Mih.

Following a pair with more than a little more time to play, the Gophers made a determined comeback, scoring five no-answer goals and winning 6-3 at Michigan State on Saturday for the first time ever. Their first scan since late October.

Despite the shortfall on the early scoreboard, the Gophers’ offensive behavior was relentless, placing a season-high 60 shots on Sparta goalkeeper Pierce Charleson in the win. The Spartans took a 2-0 and 3-1 lead then dissipated, as the Gophers scored four times in a five-minute span towards the end of the second half and the beginning of the third.

Gophers coach Bob Motzko said: “We saw it coming and we knew it could come. “It’s still early in the second half and we’re still building confidence in our squad.”

For the second night in a row, the Gophers got a goal from Ben Meyers, who has now scored nine goals in 11 career games against Sparta.

The victory broke the streak of five consecutive streaks that the Gophers had split. Equally important, the six conference points they earned over the weekend put them first in the Big Ten. They stand with 12-8-0 and 8-4-0 on aggregate in the final with an unorganized home series against Alaska next weekend.

Sparta (11-10-1, 5-7-0) opened the scoring when Gophers goalkeeper Jack LaFontaine caught the ball behind the net and tried to play, allowing Erik Middendorf to score the goal into an empty net. In Michigan State’s first game of power tonight, they doubled their lead just 11 seconds after Gophers defender Matt Staudacher swam into the box, scoring the equalizer to take a two-goal lead.

Special teams for the Gophers ended up responding late on the first as Chaz Lucius scored his second goal of the weekend following a cross from Matthew Knies that Perbix deflected.

“It was a good test for us,” said Knies, who provided two assists in the win. “This category only shows resilience in our group. We fought hard, we fought for 60 minutes, we played
