Google settles children’s privacy lawsuits in New Mexico

Google has agreed to settle two lawsuits from New Mexico, both of which allege the major tech giant violated several children’s privacy laws.

New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas announced the settlement on Monday. Government sued Google last year, alleging that the company illegally collected information about students through its educational product suite.

The state says Google violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the state’s Unfair Conduct Act by collecting as much information as the websites children visited. and videos they watched on YouTube. The lawsuit says that until 2014, Google used information it collected from its educational products in New Mexico schools “for advertising purposes.”

The tech giant will also require Play Store apps to use age screening tools to ensure they don’t collect information about children under 13.
