Google says it will delete users’ location history for visits to abortion clinics

Alphabet Inc.’s Google said Friday it would delete its members’ location history if they visited an abortion clinic, domestic violence shelter, fertility center, or other similarly sensitive location.

The change, which is expected to come into effect in the coming weeks, was announced in a blog entry.

“If our systems determine that someone has visited one of these locations, we will delete those entries from location history shortly after the visit,” said Jen Fitzpatrick, a senior Google executive.

and other big tech companies have been under pressure to limit the amount of information they collect that could be used by law enforcement agencies for abortion investigations and law enforcement.

Google has previously clashed with the government over data collection issues: a decade ago, it fought back against the National Security Agency’s bulk data collection programs.
