Google employee vlogs on the day they were fired

The recent spate of tech layoffs seems to have taken everyone by surprise.

Now a user on TikTok has gone viral after sharing his experience on the day he was fired from Google.

According to TikTok user Nicole (@nicolesdailyvlog), she, her co-workers and her boss were taken aback by the announcement, claiming the layoffs weren’t based on merit and “felt really random.”

“I think the worst thing is that nobody seemed to have been consulted on this decision,” says Nicole. “It just felt like a really bad Russian roulette game and there was no consistency in who got fired.”

The video currently has over 4.2 million views.

Nicole tells of her experience learning about the announcement after her boss asked her to call her. The boss then directed Nicole to check the news, and at that point she discovered she was part of the current wave of layoffs.

She then went to her computer only to find that she had already been banned from all of her Google accounts.

When she checked LinkedIn, Nicole said she was greeted with many similar announcements from friends and colleagues at Google and various other tech companies.

Nicole concludes her video by saying that in order to make herself feel better, she used a Disneyland season pass she owns to, in her words, “eat my feelings.”

Still, Nicole seems positive about the experience.

“Launches at Google haven’t been where I expected to start 2023, but I know it’s only going to start from here,” she wrote in the video’s caption.

Many users in the comments shared similar experiences.

“I worked for Disney+ and they did exactly that to me. No warning,” claimed one user.

“That happened to me. My company gave us notice the day before and it took me 3 months to find a new job,” recalled another. “I hope everything works out for you.”

“Girls I’m going through the same thing at another big F500 tech company right now,” claimed a third. “I was completely blind.”

“… went through that at Meta in November. In any case, stay away from LinkedIn for a few days. I know the first few days were blurry for me,” wrote another TikToker.

Despite this, many praised Nicole’s positivity

“You’re going to do great. unprofessional the way they do these things and so inhumane,” said one commenter. “This community is here for you!”

“I’m so sorry for you, but better things are coming your way,” echoed a second.
