Gillibrand says pro-choice advocates are in ‘biggest fight of a generation’ – Boston News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) – Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York said Sunday that pro-choice advocates are engaged in “the biggest battle of a generation” over abortion rights Leakage of a draft Supreme Court advisory opinion that would Roe v. Overthrow Wade, the landmark decision legalizing abortion nationwide.

“Each of us stands up, speaks out, gathers, marches, speaks to our constituents, raises their voices and their stories,” Gillibrand said CNN’s Jake Tapper on State of the Union.” “This is the greatest fight of a generation, Jake.”

“This is a fundamental moment to commit and not give up. And what I’m doing, and what a lot of my colleagues are doing, is pushing for a vote next week,” she added. “We will be aggressive towards all of our peers and our Republican allies to vote for the Roe v Wade codification. We are not giving up, we will never give up, and we will keep fighting, and if the American people are careful, this issue will also be up for a vote in November.”

Last week, a Draft opinion leaked The report, written by Conservative Justice Samuel Alito, showed the court was prepared to grant Roe v. to overthrow Wade in a case involving a Mississippi abortion law banning abortions at 15 weeks gestation.

Senate Democrats plan to bring to Senate this week Laws codifying abortion rights. The bill, known as the Women’s Health Protection Act, would need at least 60 votes to overcome a GOP filibuster. In the evenly divided Senate, 10 Republican senators would have to vote for the measure if all Democrats voted in favor. That is not to be expected.

Gillibrand pushed for a change in Senate rules Sunday to get rid of the filibuster, telling Tapper, “The argument that if we take away the filibuster,[Senate Minority Leader]Mitch McConnell and Republicans across the country will do bad things, these.” bad things are literally already happening.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said during a news conference Sunday ahead of the vote on abortion rights codification that he plans to table a procedural motion to enable a vote.

“This is no longer an abstract exercise,” said the New York Democrat. “This is the real deal and all eyes are on them so we can always hope and we must have that vote. Every senator has to show where he or she stands.”

A CNN poll The poll, conducted after the unveiling of the Supreme Court’s draft opinion, found that 66% of Americans believed Roe v. Wade was not to be crushed, with 59% supporting legislation introducing a nationwide abortion right.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut predicted Sunday that if Republicans win the Senate in November, “they absolutely will pass a national abortion ban.”

“They abolished the filibuster for Supreme Court justices for the express purpose of installing the justices who ruled Roe v. Wade,” he said in an interview with Fox. “I think you can of course assume that if they win control of the Senate in this next election, they would also change the rules to pass this national abortion ban.”

According to Alito’s draft, the court would see Roe v. Repeal Wade’s claim to a federal constitutional right to abortion. Under current law, the government cannot interfere with a woman’s decision to terminate a pregnancy before about 23 weeks when a fetus could live outside the uterus.

A final statement on the case is expected to be released later this spring or early summer.
