Get Shafted Regroups for competing in Country Championships

With qualifying action for the Country Championships arriving left, right and center around NSW, some hands-on Southeast regional gallops are keen to set an early milestone in the main race at Monday’s Sapphire Coast meeting.

And it’s a big finisher and still light-footed five-year-old looking to reclaim his best in the Merimbula Cup and Country Preview Feature Run at Class 4 over 1408m.

Get Shafted, a strong gelding son by Shaft who always races sparingly, returns from a failed Tube mission after being beaten well in a tougher Benchmark 72 over 1400m at Warwick Farm 12 days ago.

Little-known Moruya-based trainer Lynn Morrison quickly got her stable star back on familiar ground, where she hopes to start a bid for a crack at Country Championships qualifiers for the $500,000 grand final in Randwick on April 1st.

Prior to that run, Get Shafted swept home to win a BM 58 in the 1200m after thundering from far back for a feature BM 87 town plate spot in Moruya on December 18.

A big strider who prefers firmer ground and good speed for chasing is ideally targeted at the SERA Country Championships Qualifier (1425m) at Moruya on March 5th, with the top two above the line booking their spots at Randwick.

And it’s easy to see why this little stable puts so much faith in Get Shafted.

He has won three times for Morrison shipyard since the start of spring 2021, but the only other winner in all that time was a BM 66 success on heavy ground in mid-January last year.
