BERLIN – Germany will temporarily introduce some border controls as the country prepares to host the summit of the Group of Seven later this month in the Bavarian Alps.

The summit of wealthy nations, with leaders from Germany, the United States, France, Japan and other leading industrialized countries, will be held in Elmau from June 26-28, and Germany has ordered increased security at its border from June 13-July 3 . This was announced by the country’s interior ministry on Saturday.

“The controls are intended to prevent potential violent criminals from entering German territory,” the statement said. “Travellers must therefore expect controls during this period.”

The Ministry of the Interior has not elaborated on the violent threats to be expected, but several protests against the summit are planned in nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen and in the Bavarian capital Munich during the summit meeting.

The temporary border controls will be carried out “flexibly in terms of location and time” and “at Germany’s internal land, air and sea borders”, which usually fall under the European Union’s Schengen agreement, which allows freedom of travel.
