Hollywood megastar George Clooney has expressed interest in coming to the rescue of troubled championship contender Derby County and his current manager Wayne Rooney.
The East Midlands club have been in administration for six months and have battled relegation all season after being penalized 21 points for historic financial breaches.
Were it not for the severity of the punishment they received, the Rams would sit comfortably in midfield, with Rooney earning praise for the way he’s managed the team through the crisis.
ER and Ocean’s 11 actor Clooney began following one of the founding members of English football after being introduced to the club by Derby-born actor Jack O’Connell, with whom he worked on the 2016 film Money Monster .
Clooney made an unsuccessful bid to buy Spanish club Málaga two years ago but now has his sights set on Derby despite their dangerous plight.
Why George Clooney supports Derby County
“I’ve worked with a few UK football fans and their mood often depended on how well their favorite football team played in their last game,” Clooney told Derbyshire Life
“I found it quite odd and wanted to know what led up to it. No one wants their side to lose but it seemed British football fans were much more involved in the meaning of the result.
“The Rams were introduced to me by Jack O’Connell a few years ago when we were doing a movie together. He was so passionate about his team and has followed Derby County his whole life.
“I asked him a few questions and there was no stopping him – he really loves the club and knows so much about it. I had to admire that and hearing about the history of the club was quite fascinating and captured my imagination.
“I watched a few games on TV and gradually I started to understand football better and started looking out for Derby County games and results. I’ve been watching her ever since.’
The 60-year-old is quoted by The Sun said: “Derby are a great football club with a fantastic history and I’m sure they have a great future too.
“I know there have been issues lately but nothing can be fixed and given the circumstances the team worked really hard and played well.
“When I watch, I realize that in addition to the players on the pitch, the fans on the pitch have also played their part.
“My interest in football has certainly grown in recent years and a few years ago I was asked if I would like to join a group of others looking to buy Malaga Football Club in Spain.
“It was quite an exciting prospect, but ultimately it fell through. Perhaps owning a football club is the next best thing to playing for one. Maybe one day.’
