Gen Zers admit social media is the only place they can truly be themselves, a study shows

HALF Gen Z admit they hide their true selves when not on social media.

One study found that a shocking 58 percent of 18-25 year olds feel less comfortable in their own skin in the real world than they do online.

Teens gave a mix of reasons for feeling this way, with 55 percent reporting struggling with a lack of confidence outside of the virtual world.

42 percent also said they worried about the judgment of others as a key factor.

Another half of respondents admitted to having a “secret” online alter ego, while 55 percent admitted they use social media to add excitement to their lives.

Instagram, Facebook and TikTok were cited as the platforms where teens feel most comfortable being themselves.

Public figures also play an important role in helping young people become more confident, with two-thirds of Gen Z saying they have been positively influenced by a celebrity.

Harry Styles, Zendaya and David Bowie head the 20-strong list of top celebrity influencers.

Scott Morris, Adobe’s head of marketing, who presented the study, called Bowie “a true icon who firmly believed that art resides within everyone.”

Just under half said that as they got older, becoming more comfortable in their own skin came with it, and 59 per cent expected that one day they would look back on their younger selves and wish they had been more comfortable with themselves.

Hope is not lost for youth, however, as 70 percent believe society is on the right track in breaking down all barriers to become more self-expressive and authentic in the future.
