Gas leak prompts evacuations and road closures on May 9th and 9th

The leak happened near an intersection that was closed for construction.

(Salt Lake City Police Department) Emergency responders responded to a gas leak near 900 South and 900 East on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.

Businesses and residents in Salt Lake City’s 9th and 9th neighborhoods were evacuated Wednesday afternoon due to a gas leak.

According to a tweet from the Salt Lake City Fire Department, the gas leak occurred due to nearby construction. The intersection of 900 South and 900 East was recently closed for construction as part of the 900 South Reconstruction Project, the goal of which is Improve the 9 Line Trail.

All pedestrian and vehicle traffic into the area was closed Wednesday afternoon as teams from Dominion Energy worked to repair the leak, officials said. It was unclear how many residents and businesses were being evacuated, but street closures and evacuations were being conducted within half a block of Ninth and Ninth Streets, the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a tweet.

Officials advised people to avoid the area but could not say when the leak would be repaired. No injuries were reported.

This is an evolving story.
