Gary Neville has received a lot of praise Liverpool striker Luis Diaz is surprised Manchester United made no attempt to sign the Colombian star before his move to Anfield was confirmed.

Liverpool completed a £37.5million move for Diaz towards the end of the January transfer window, with the 25-year-old signing a contract with the Merseyside club until 2027.

Tottenham were heavily linked with Diaz before Liverpool struck and Neville believes his former club Manchester United should have been in the running too.

Diaz has had an excellent start to his Liverpool career, scoring two goals in six league games and helping Jurgen Klopp’s side come within a point of Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Neville reckons United will need to sign “two or three” attacking players this summer with Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial all expected to leave and says Diaz would have been an ideal addition to Old Trafford.

“It’s incredible that Diaz went to Tottenham, he then went to Liverpool – there wasn’t even a mention of him going to Manchester United,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Manchester United will lose [Edinson] Cavani is likely to lose at the end of the season [Paul] Pogba, they lost [Mason] greenwood, [Marcus] Rashford is out of shape [Anthony] Martial has left for Sevilla but is likely to leave at the end of the season.

“So they think they’re going to need two or three in those positions by the end of the season and they haven’t even been mentioned.

“You see that lad, he didn’t have his best game tonight Diaz but you see him in the Carabao Cup final and I saw him at Brighton on Saturday and I think ‘what kind of player he is’.

“Tough, aggressive, works hard, creates chances, his reaction when they give the ball away is incredible, sprints back. I have to say Manchester United’s recruitment has been disappointing for a long time.

Liverpool are now just a point behind title rivals Manchester City – who they play next month – and Klopp said: “We’ve obviously had a good time. We need that.

“We’re a point behind but it’s still the same. We have to win soccer games. Then we face City, then everyone else.

“Do you think that in ten years someone will say that you should be proud? [of finishing second by one point]? Probably not. We know we have a special group here and we’re trying to do everything we can out of the situation.’
