United endured their worst Premier League season ever and sixth place means there will be no Champions League football at Old Trafford next season.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, ended the campaign with 24 goals in all competitions, including 18 in the Premier League, but the 37-year-old is reportedly considering leaving United this summer following a woeful season.
However, Neville believes Ronaldo will stay at United but feels his return has ‘ended’ Cavani’s time at Old Trafford and ‘upset’ the hierarchy in the dressing room with Maguire and Fernandes.
“I think he’s staying,” Neville said of Ronaldo on Sky Sports’ The Overlap.
“I think at the beginning of the season he immediately created a problem with Cavani.
‘[Cavani was] They were asked to stay and lead the attack for the year but when they signed Ronaldo Cavani was shot and ended. It disrupted the dynamic in the dressing room for Bruno.
“I think Bruno looks up to him like a godfather in Portugal, so he felt a bit inferior to what he was before. It naturally made Maguire a little inferior as captain – nothing from Ronaldo.
“His presence on the pitch alone means everyone is looking to Cristiano as Harry tries to establish himself as United captain.
“I don’t know where the cliques are, I’m not close enough, but you mention words like ‘lazy’ ‘broken’.
‘Harry Maguire has gone from someone I think grew on the pitch last year in Covid to someone who looks like he’s been shot to pieces when he puts on a red shirt.
“Bruno looks like half the player.
“The rest of them, the young players, it looks like you’ve lost confidence in them, let’s get rid of them. Something went fundamentally wrong in the dressing room, in the management, and I don’t think anyone can be absolved of the blame. Everyone must be to blame for that.”
