Gary Neville reckons with just two Manchester United’s signings since 2013 have fared well and proved good value, leading the club to dub the club a ‘footballers graveyard’.

The former Red Devils defender responded with defeats to Brighton and Brentford in the Premier League after a miserable start to the season under new manager Erik ten Hag.

The problems clearly run far deeper than just the performances in those two games, with Neville saying the way the club has been run has made it a place where top players don’t want to play.

“This football club has become a graveyard for football players. Where players consider whether they come to the club at all. You can’t bring players in,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“I have to say where I got to the point on Saturday [after the 4-0 loss at Brentford] If a school moves away from the players, if it underperforms and consistently performs poorly over a period of time, they will be subject to special measures by the government.

“The children are not blamed. That’s where Manchester Untied is, it’s special measures and you can’t blame the kids anymore.

Neville feels Glazer family-owned recruitment is clearly a problem and he looked back with fellow Sky Sports colleague Jamie Carragher at the signings the club have made over the past decade.

The former England defenders separated all major signings into good, okay and bad, with only two players making it into the top category: Bruno Fernandes and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“It’s one of the problems Manchester United have had for 10 years. They were moving back and forth between managers and allowing managers to influence the overall attitude, that was a huge problem,” Neville said.

“We’ve looked at the past 10 years of major signings at the club, £1.25billion has been spent.

“We think there are only two signings right now that can be said to have performed well and been good value for money. Bruno Fernandes and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.”
