Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have both picked Arsenal legends as the toughest opponents they’ve ever faced in the Premier League, with the former The Manchester United man opts for Marc Overmars while the Liverpool hero can’t look past Thierry Henry.

Neville and Carragher faced most of the greatest players to ever appear in the Premier League in their long careers in the English top flight.

Given the many epic battles Manchester United and Arsenal had during Neville’s playing days, it’s no surprise he’s picked a Gunners star and with the right-back having to play the left winger, Overmars is the obvious choice.

“Directly because of those years of struggles against Arsenal it would have to be Overmars,” Neville told Sky Sports on Monday night when asked about his toughest opponent.

“It was a massive problem, especially at Old Trafford, a massive pitch. [Emmanuel] Petit would throw balls over my head and he would go in.’

Neville also recalled the nightmare of facing Luis Figo in Champions League games while calling David Ginola a fearsome opponent, but not at Old Trafford.

“I really fought against most of them. But the top players, I remember playing against Figo in the Champions League, absolutely incredible,” said the former full-back.

“Overmars, Ginola … not at Old Trafford but away from home at Newcastle or Tottenham gave me a lot of trouble. Scored a great goal against me in Newcastle and sent me off at White Hart Lane. Just his physical build and the fact that he could walk both ways.’

Neville considered his answer for a few seconds, but Carragher stuck to his unequivocally, sure that Henry was the most difficult forward he’d ever had to defend against.

“Henry by a mile,” said the Reds legend. “The players we both mentioned is because they were so quick.

“You talk about skills and you get close to people and you can figure that out, use your brain and experience, but when someone has a blistering pace, it’s out of your control.

“For me, Thierry Henry is the best player in the Premier League.”
