Garth Crooks believes James Ward-Prowse is the ‘perfect replacement’ for Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

The Southampton midfielder scored twice on Sunday as his side came two goals down in a 2-2 draw with Brighton.

Ward-Prowse has often been hailed as one of the best players outside of the top six, but former Tottenham forward Crooks believes a move to Liverpool to one day replace Henderson could be on the cards.

“If you’re 2-0 from home at half-time, you’d better have someone on your team who’s capable of reversing the deficit or it might as well be game over,” Crooks said BBC Sport after choosing him for their Team of the Week.

“Luckily Southampton have James Ward-Prowse who seems to have the ability to dig the Saints out of almost any hole.

‘His two goals against Brighton were timely as they were struck beautifully. Southampton would do well to hold on to this player.

“He has so much more to offer and would be the perfect replacement for Jordan Henderson at Liverpool.”

His brace against the Seagulls, including a textbook free-kick, earned him nine goals for the Premier League season, a personal best.

The 27-year-old narrowly missed out on a spot at last summer’s European Championships but Micah Richards and Jermaine Jenas believe he’s doing enough to head to Qatar for this year’s World Cup.

“As far as England goes, he’s an absolute certainty for me to go to the World Cup,” said Richards.

“He has to go because he’s clever on the ball, takes free kicks, is reliable. A captain – he leads his team.

“At the start of the season at Southampton, a lot of people expected them to go down and he put them together throughout the season. Nine goals are just remarkable.”

Jenas, added: “He’s obviously just been using missing out on the European Championship squad as fuel for him this season and I think that’s exactly why he’s gone into this season in the form he’s started into this season .”
