How high can a garden fence be?

A garden fence can, contrary to popular belief, be up to 100 meters high, but any fence taller than 2 meters will require planning permission.

Any fence less than 2 meters high does not require planning approval.

However, there are a few catches to be aware of.

If you are considering front yard fences, remember that fences along a driveway can be as little as 1m or 3 feet high.

If you wish to set up a trellis on a 2m fence, you must obtain city approval.

However, if a plant you grow on this trellis reaches a height of more than 2 meters, you do not need a permit for the growing plant.
