A “lone wolf gangster” who was being hunted for the stabbing murder of four victims at a private nursery in China was killed while fleeing police when he was hit by a car.

Liu Xiaohui has been named as the police’s prime suspect after a masked man was filmed storming a private kindergarten in China’s Jiangxi province three days ago.

Footage believed to be the 48-year-old showed the killer entering the child’s bedroom, barring a black baseball cap, dressed from head to toe in white and cream.

Two victims were killed instantly, two others later died in hospital from their injuries, and a number of others were injured.

CCTV, shared by the state-run Beijing Daily, showed a police officer running from the carnage to an ambulance with a tiny child in his arms.

Fleeing a nationwide manhunt hours after the bloodbath, Xiaohui crouched in a tunnel near a highway.

Hearing the search party approach, he sprinted from his hiding place, climbed over a fence and was hit by a vehicle while desperately trying to escape via the high-speed highway, according to a police statement.

He was taken to hospital for treatment but died from his injuries, authorities added.

The ages of the kindergarten victims were not disclosed.

Police officers in Jiangxi last week branded Xiaohui a gangster in a post about the attack on China’s Twitter-style Weibo.

A police statement at the time said: “The public security organs are making every effort to hunt down the suspect.”

Further video surveillance of the attack showed shocked children being carried out of the building by adults believed to be either parents or teachers.

China has tightened school security after a string of deadly attacks in recent years, mostly blamed on killers seeking revenge against society or suffering from mental illness.

Knife and ax attacks on children are alarmingly common in China, where private gun ownership is banned.

Homemade explosives and petrol bombs were also used
previous attacks.

Around 100 children and adults have been killed and hundreds injured in seemingly uncoordinated “lone wolf” attacks in China over the past decade, the motive for which is unclear.

The mostly male attackers were either killed, committed suicide, or tried and executed.

Acts of violence against China’s youth are hitting the country particularly hard because of its chronically low birth rate after decades of population control.

The attacks have prompted calls for further investigation into the causes of the outbreaks of brutality among child victims.

Two youths were killed and 16 others injured last April, as a
A knife-wielding maniac entered a kindergarten in southern China.

In 2020, another savage used a blade to cut open 37 students and two adults at an elementary school in southern China, with local media identifying a security guard as the perpetrator.

Later that year, a man was sentenced to death for poisoning dozens of children in revenge against a colleague who killed an infant.
