Gaming: The teenage entrepreneurs making “millions” on Roblox

In children’s rooms around the world, teenagers toil away hoping to turn their favorite game – Roblox – into a full-time job.
Some have enough money to go to college, others earn more than their parents, and more and more are on their way to becoming millionaires.
Roblox is a cross-platform game that allows people to play a variety of games, create their own games, or chat with others online
It boasts over 202 million monthly users with players signing up from all over the world.
The game recently came under fire for a series of inappropriate games such as “depression rooms” and “sex role-playing games.”
But for the majority, playing the game is a safe, even lucrative, experience.
Usernames like Loleris and badcc may mean nothing to the older generation, but in the world of Roblox, these people are celebrities.
They made their fortunes as teenagers developing in-game experiences that gained widespread popularity.
Young people are now doing everything they can to follow in their footsteps.
It’s a growing and busy fledgling industry with millions of pounds at stake.
But the game’s skyrocketing popularity is still relatively unknown in the offline world and, crucially, many parents of children.
Based in Washington State, Ammon Ranger is one of those Roblox users who make thousands all year round.
He hopes to one day turn his winnings into millions.
Ammon started out as a shy high school student and quickly gained confidence and skills.
He started playing in 2015 and launched a YouTube channel two years later. Now, besides his tender age of 18, Roblox is essentially his full-time job.
Ammon told Metro.co.uk: “I don’t think the public really understands how Roblox is these days and how much it’s grown.
“There are literally 15-year-olds helping run multi-million dollar game studios from their bedrooms.
“I grew up playing the game and have worked or been involved with every corner of the Roblox ecosystem, so I’ve talked a lot about it with other developers. Some teams are turning in around a million dollars a month, that’s crazy.’
Ammon saw his rise to success as a result of his involvement in Mad City, one of the most popular in-game experiences in Roblox.
He became the game’s community director and also spent his time with various other users creating video content and editing footage.
Ammon speaks with a wisdom beyond his years, and the use of words like “customer” shows that these “jobs” aren’t just teenagers pretending to take their jobs seriously.
He said: “My parents were hesitant when I started investing time in this thing.
How do kids make money on Roblox?
Roblox allows users to create their own mini-games known as “experiences”.
Similar to Minecraft, you may see games inspired by TV shows or movies.
Gaming experiences like popular creations JailBreak and Mad City help attract kids to Roblox.
Millions of kids around the world spend time in their game and make in-app purchases that have resulted in the company’s healthy profits.
In return, those behind popular experiences can make money on Roblox.
The company also launched a developer exchange program last October, where developers convert the virtual currency earned through their games – called Robux – into real live cash.
In 2017, Roblox distributed more than 30 million US dollars to young developers on its platform.
“But once I started making thousands of dollars playing Roblox, they were a lot more open to me pursuing it.
“I know not to put my eggs in a basket, with the internet in general it’s so easy to set up and take down.
“We don’t know what YouTube or Roblox will be like in 20, 40 years or if people will still be watching gameplay. It’s all fairly new so it’s hard to predict.’
Roblox is aware of its young workforce and says everything is being done to support them.
It can take “years” to improve profitable skills, but anyone can start.
A Roblox spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: “At its core, Roblox is about supporting creativity and self-expression – today there are more than 32 million virtual experiences on the platform, created by a growing global community of creators and developers were created.
“Anyone can start building on Roblox for free right away, with no upfront costs and no coding skills.
“And while not everyone can turn a hobby into a source of income, and those who often take years to hone their skills, we’re incredibly proud of the growing number of developers who started out as hobbyists on the platform and have made it through.” so successful that they now run their own development studios.
“Today, more and more people and professional studios are successfully using Roblox to do what they love – bring their creative visions to life.”
Many young people get inspired by the YouTubers or YouTubers they watch online and diligently follow each of their posts.
But when trying to replicate their success, many kids and teens become discouraged as they struggle to capture the same audience.
Ammon emphasized that patience is key.
The 18-year-old continued, “I started out as a fan of all these YouTubers you see everywhere like I’m just an average viewer.
“I was just another person in the giant bucket – a view out of hundreds of thousands on all of these people’s videos.
“But I’ve really put a lot of work into making connections with all these creators – it’s possible for anyone to do that consistently.
“If you’re on YouTube, you might not have zero to a million subscribers. It may not even be zero to 100,000 subscribers, but you’ll see something.
“As long as you have a computer and you can learn, anyone can do something like this. And that’s why it’s so widespread and why so many people are doing it.
“When you learn how to program and code, you never know you could make a game that explodes, and the next thing you know you’re going to be running a multi-million dollar game studio for Roblox. It’s a pretty cool vertical.”
