Fuel and fertilizer prices are top concerns for Nebraska farmers

An eastern Nebraska farmer says fuel and fertilizer prices are a priority this growing season.

Quentin Connealy says he’s shifting acres of corn to soybeans because of record fertilizer prices. “Bean prices are good and with a few years of corn, we can still produce some pretty good soybeans from the bottom of the river.”

He tells Brownfield the change is only for this year. “Typically we work corn on corn for three years, then we go back to the beans and that’s a nice yield and that’s a good platform that we have on a couple of 300 to 350 acres.”

Connealy says he’s waiting for fuel prices to come down before shutting down the rest of his stash. “(I) didn’t log in early enough before the red off-road fuel went up.

He grows corn and soybeans near Tekamah on the Missouri River.
