Frank Lampard has been urged to take responsibility for Everton’s poor form after questioning his players’ mentality after Sunday’s defeat by Crystal Palace.

Relegation threatened Toffees appeared to have stopped the rot last weekend as they clinched a much-needed win over Newcastle to sit three points clear of the drop zone.

Any momentum generated by that win, however, was killed at Selhurst Park on Sunday as the Eagles galloped to a 4-0 win that left Lampard seething.

He told that BBC: “We play at the top of football here. This is a cup quarter final to get to Wembley and if you don’t have the confidence to play you can quickly turn it around and say do you have the bollocks to play?

“Sorry, excuse me, but that’s football reality. If you’re somewhere in the middle, then don’t worry.’

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes Lampard may have long to regret those comments and could ultimately lose the dressing room, as he did at Stamford Bridge, if he publicly criticizes his players again.

He said, “He has to take responsibility, he’s the manager,” Sutton said. “The team is in absolute disarray but his language was extremely strong and questioned the courage of the team.

‘He talked about it [how] He doesn’t have a magic wand to get into people’s minds and change the resilience of the entire team. Well… isn’t that his job?

“Lampard has been throwing things out there and I wonder if he’s going to regret some of the things he’s said because it can be detrimental in the dressing room.

“It’s not a good dressing room at this point, but if you start questioning the player’s courage, I think there could be a problem.

“He came out and slaughtered his players and yet he needs those players to keep him going so what he said is very, very dangerous in my opinion. It’s a big gamble what he said and let’s see if the players react to that.

“He had a difficult job to take on, most of the blame lies with him [previous manager Rafa] Benitez in this case, but he didn’t make the impact I think he expected – and Everton fans expected it of him.
