Frank Lampard has promised to send a message of thanks to Mason Mount after his former player inadvertently boosted Everton’s Premier League hopes of survival by helping Chelsea beat Leeds United.

Mount put in a superb performance at Elland Road on Wednesday night, scoring and providing an assist as Chelsea sealed a 3-0 win to heap misery on Jesse Marsch’s side.

Whilst Chelsea’s full focus was on taking a step closer to qualifying for the Champions League, their victory certainly helped former manager and club legend Lampard, who is trying to keep Everton from being relegated to the Championship.

With Norwich City and Watford already out, Leeds are currently bottom of the relegation zone but could overtake 17th-placed Burnley and 16th-placed Everton with two games to go.

After Everton’s goalless draw with Watford, Lampard was asked and informed about Chelsea’s win over Leeds United be in sports: “It was useful, it was.

“I will send him [Mason Mount] later a thank you message. Those things are out of your hands but Mason is a fantastic player and I’m happy for him to get those numbers because he’s such a high level player and those numbers reflect that.

“It’s brilliant for him and Chelsea did us a favor to get that result but we have to make sure we do our own thing to get this over the line.”

Everton seemed in serious danger of relegation about a month ago but Lampard’s side have picked up points in four of their last five games, beating Chelsea and Leicester City ahead of their draw with Watford.

Lampard added: “There’s still work to be done but if you look at our recent results we’ve put ourselves in a decent position.

“There weren’t enough clear chances. But if you’re not at your best, you need to make sure you get a point. We haven’t done that often enough this season.

“Watford had players playing with something to lose. They had nothing in play and sometimes it can be difficult to counter that. They gave us a game.’

Chelsea manager Tuchel, meanwhile, praised his side’s performance against the ten-man Leeds, particularly after the Blues conceded a 97th-minute equalizer in their last game against Wolves at the weekend.

“We were very focused,” he said. “Even against eleven players we were clearly the better team,” said Tuchel. “I felt the team was very engaged, focused and calm. I had a good feeling.

“I was happy with how we played and how the players reacted after the late equalizer on Saturday. We trusted ourselves, but it was necessary to clear the air and refocus.

‘The level of discipline and coverage in the defensive approach, we were more cautious than in the last game. We made sure we conceded a goal.’
