PARIS – Paris regional authorities warned residents to be vigilant on Wednesday as temperatures soar to 36 degrees Celsius (97 Fahrenheit). In a tweet, the Ile-de-France prefecture also urged residents to moderate their water consumption amid a “major drought”.

Elsewhere in France, some 27 departments have now been placed on “orange alert” as a heatwave spreads mainly across eastern mainland France. Temperatures are expected to reach as high as 40 °C (104 °F) in some parts of the south. The heat peaks on Wednesday and begins to drop on Thursday.

According to the French weather agency, this August heat wave should be shorter than in July. France’s second heatwave of the year leaves Paris sweltering
