Fox News is melting over all-female M&Ms

Fox News is targeting M&M’s after it was revealed the candy would soon be available in an all-female version.

The outrage began when Mars, the company that makes the chocolates, announced in a press release last week that it plans to produce packs “that spotlight dynamic female M&M characters.”

“The all-female packs celebrate women everywhere who are disrupting the status quo,” the company said. “The limited edition product will appear on inspirational purple, brown and green packaging and will be the first combined representation of the female trio Spokescandies.”

But the campaign, which will also include a portion of the proceeds going to women’s organizations, drew immediate backlash from conservatives.

Some pointed to a 2015 post from M&M’s Twitter account of two female characters holding hands as evidence that the new campaign was somehow part of Mars’ seemingly secretive efforts to promote lesbianism.

Both the 2015 image and the latest announcement eventually made it to Fox News and seemed to draw the wrath of the network’s pundits.

One moderator argued that the campaign, particularly the introduction of an “inclusive” purple character, would only serve to further weaken the US on the geopolitical stage.

“It’s the kind of thing that makes China say, ‘Oh well, keep focusing on giving people their own color of M&Ms while we take over all the mineral deposits around the world,'” the expert said.

The outrage quickly took to Twitter shortly after, where conservatives threatened to boycott the candy maker.

“Exactly what we needed…have ‘woken up’ confectionery companies,” said one commenter.

In a statement about the campaign, Gabrielle Wesley, chief marketing officer, Mars Wrigley North America, said the new product was intended solely to celebrate and honor women.

“The M&M’S brand is committed to using the power of fun to create purposeful connections as we work to create a world where everyone feels included,” she said. “Women around the world are changing their definition of success and happiness while challenging the status quo, so we’re thrilled to be able to recognize and celebrate them – and who better to help us on this mission than our own powerhouse Green, Brown and Purple?”

Incredibly, this is far from the first time conservatives have taken offense at M&Ms.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson devoted an entire segment last year to the complaint about the removal of green M&M’s “sexy boots.”

“M&M’s won’t be satisfied until every cartoon character is deeply unattractive and utterly androgynous,” Carlson said at the time. “Until the moment you didn’t want to have a drink with any of them. That is the goal. If you’re totally off, we’ve achieved justice.

The bizarre depiction is just the latest in an ever-growing list of culture war complaints from America’s largest news network.
