Life is like a box of chocolates…or so says Forrest Gump, the lover tom hanks Character who enchanted moviegoers in 1994 with his southern charm and folk sayings passed down from his mother (Sally Field).
Based on the novel by Winston Groom, Forrest Gump was released less than four months after Hanks won an Oscar for his performance in 1993 Philadelphia. 1995 became the Captain Phillips Star took home his second Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Gump, becoming only the second actor in history to win the trophy two years in a row.
The film also won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects and Best Editing, and was nominated in seven other categories. “I feel like I’m standing on magical feet in a special effects shoot that’s too incredible to imagine and far too expensive to accomplish,” Hanks said during his acceptance speech. “But here is my sign, and there I shall seek. And believe me, the power, pleasure and emotion of this moment is a constant at the speed of light.”
Forrest Gump told the story of a young man of the same name who inadvertently witnessed countless important events in American history during his career in the Army and later as a shrimp boat captain in the Gulf of Mexico. Over the course of the film, Gump meets three presidents, witnesses Watergate, hangs out with the Black Panthers, fights in the Vietnam War, inspires John Lennon to write Imagine, and teaches Elvis Presley how to dance.
“It was an absolute crapshoot,” Hanks said United States today of the film in 2019. “It’s without a doubt a really crazy, unique film. And it’s a film where the great moments that resonate will change depending on when you watch it.”
While Hanks’ performance was one of the film’s highlights, he has since become known for his many quotable lines: “stupid is as stupid as” and the like. During an interview with 2015 Graham Nortonthe Big Star said, “Run Forrest, run!” was one of the most common things fans would yell at him when they met him on the street, until Throw away premiered in 2000.
“Now they just scream ‘WILSON!'” he joked. “Obviously ‘Wilson’ is a universal language word [so] They don’t bother dubbing it into other languages. So it’s in Hindi, it’s in Japanese, Chinese.”
