Former teacher says “everything is better” when he works at Costco

A former teacher who now works at Costco says she doesn’t miss winter break because working in retail has made her life better than when she was a teacher.

The Costco employee, also known online as Millennial Ms. Frizzle (@millennialmsfrizz), posted a TikTok video on Saturday explaining how her work life has improved. In the video, she says 2022 is her first year without a winter break, but she’s feeling “great”. She had to work seven days in a row, including Christmas Eve, but she doesn’t seem upset about it.

As a teacher, she “just survived every moment,” says @millenialmsfrizz. By the time she got through the fall semester through Christmas break, she would be so exhausted that she would “literally get sick,” she adds.

“So yeah, it feels pretty good not to be a teacher at this point,” the TikToker says with a smile in her video.

@millennialmsfrizz I used to be a teacher and now I work at Costco. This is my first year without a winter break. I don’t miss it at all. My pace in my work life is so much better now, I’m not sick or exhausted like I used to be when I was a teacher. When I was a teacher, I mainly used my winter break to relax and move on to the next semester just to survive. #f#formerteachert#teacherquittokc#costcotiktokr#retailworkere#exteachertiktokc#careertransitiont#teachersonbreak ♬ Original sound – Millennial Ms. Frizzle

The Costco employee says she’s been working in retail all season, which has boosted her energy levels.

“Everything is better,” she says in the video. “I can’t believe I’ve ever felt so limited that I ever thought I couldn’t do anything else. I am better now than in my livable memory.”

In the video’s caption, the TikToker adds: “My pace in my work life is so much better now, I’m not sick or exhausted like I used to be when I was a teacher. When I was a teacher, I mainly used my winter break to recover and move on to the next semester just to survive.”

As of Monday, the video had garnered two million views on TikTok. Several viewers regretted how difficult and exhausting it can be for teachers.

“If retail is somehow less stressful than education, our future generations… what a world we live in,” commented one viewer.

“I wish the classes were more attractive. It’s such an important job but the teachers aren’t paid enough or taken care of,” shared another user.

Other former teachers said they also left the profession to find less stressful work. Some explained what it feels like to be a teacher.

“I’m an HS math teacher and I compare teaching to an abusive marriage that you’re afraid to leave,” said one user.

“I’m a teacher. I sleep almost every break. Then I’m sad I didn’t do anything else. It’s a vicious cycle,” wrote a second.

A third commented: “After 10 years as a teacher I’m now an administrative assistant. Don’t panic anymore [sic] Attack when I finish my day I have energy for my family.”

“I told my husband that I don’t need the downtime that I used to need as a teacher. I’m not burned out!” a fourth said. In response to that comment, the creator wrote, “I feel the same way.”

Some viewers commented that working at Costco isn’t an easy job either, showing just how difficult teaching must be for some.

“The week before Christmas is usually crazy at Costco! So that says LOTS about how teaching compares,” commented one such viewer. The creator wrote in response: “And our location has only been open for 8 weeks so it’s extra busy. And I work in membership! So yes…”

The Daily Dot reached out to the creator via a TikTok comment.
