Former ‘Percy Jackson’ star responds to Annabeth’s casting backlash

Yesterday, Percy Jackson and the Olympians Author Rick Riordan released a statement aimed at a minority of fans who were upset about his casting decisions for the franchise’s upcoming Disney Plus series. Today, a star from the previous film adaptations came out to share their support.

Alexandra Daddario, who originally played the character of Annabeth in the couple Percy Jackson Movies, threw her support behind Leah Jeffries, the newly cast actress who will take on the role of Annabeth.

News of Jeffries getting the role was first announced last week, and while the majority of feedback has been positive, there has been some unfounded outrage. This led to harassment that forced the young actress to lose her TikTok account, and Riordan has since spoken out, urging disgruntled fans to direct their hatred at him rather than “bullying and harassing a child.”

“As strong as Leah is, as much as we have discussed the potential for this type of reaction and the intense pressure this role will bring, the negative comments she has received online are misplaced. You must stop. Now.”

Riordan further explained that the casting process was thorough so they could make the best decisions to inhibit and bring to life the personalities of the characters he created. For Annabeth, Jeffries was the perfect choice.

While there was harassment from the vocal minority, a number of fans, who eclipse the critics by comparison, have rallied behind Jeffries and shown solidarity by using the hashtag #LeahisOurAnnabeth.

The series Percy Jackson and the Olympians will start filming this summer.
