former Manchester United director Michael Knighton – who almost bought the club in the 1980s – says he is making good progress on a “hostile bid” for the Red Devils.

Fans’ long-standing anger at the current Manchester United owner will only get worse as their battles continue on and off the pitch.

The opening weekend’s defeat to Brighton in the Premier League and a bizarre approach to the transfer market have meant the frustration was felt even more.

Knighton is hoping to ride to the rescue and buy the club from the Glazer family and reckons things are going well in a “hostile takeover bid”.

Memorably, the 70-year-old had accepted an offer for the club in 1989 that promised huge investment and even appeared on the pitch at Old Trafford to celebrate his imminent takeover but it never materialized.

However, he believes he can finally reach the club he supports and explains he is working to find partners to fund a deal.

“We’re a club in crisis and we all know why,” Knighton told Man Utd The Religion. “We have an incompetent and frankly useless owner who knows little about this football game.

“Everyone knows that we need new owners for this football club and that is my goal and those are my goals. I’m making good progress, keep talking to people, I’ve got some good commitments and good funding.

‘We are now working on the offer document. Keep in mind that this is a hostile offer – it simply means the racket is not officially for sale. But my intention is to make a legitimate, strong and commercial offer to these owners to say: “You have no more road, it is time to go because your time is up”.

“The club is in crisis and will remain in crisis as long as we have this current ownership.”

He elaborated on what needs to change at United, saying: “It’s time for them to go.

“They need to stop pulling these huge dividends out of the club. We must stop paying these enormous debt service costs. It’s time for them to sell.

“When I put this offer together, I don’t have to be the front person, I don’t have to be the spokesperson. I just want to see our Manchester United Football Club in the hands of the right footballers with the right vision.

“We need to fix our stadium and get our club back to where it belongs. We’re in a crisis and it won’t change until you leave.’

United fans will want to see some action rather than words from the businessman who has never been shy about talking himself into it.

According to his website: There are people in the sports world who say Michael Knighton was just the man, they even say he was actually the “Big Bang” in professional sports.

“He was the catalyst that started the race for all sports entities to pursue a radical business model (the same model he gave to Manchester United when he joined the board on October 25, 1989) which included as its primary raison d’être, the pursuit of pure commercialism as a means of increasing sales.’
