Former Dairy Queen worker says she made $32 an hour

A woman on TikTok went viral for sharing the surprising difference in hourly wages between her old jobs at Dairy Queen and Wells Fargo.

The woman, whose name is Yaya (@mariahvessel), shared her work history by stitching together TikTok user @tinyb274’s video of paying fast food restaurants.

“Just because I work at McDonald’s doesn’t mean I’m broke,” @tinyb274 said in her video. She added that she makes $16 an hour at McDonald’s.

“See, I love this because when I was working at my local DQ, I was making $32 an hour,” Yaya said in her sting. “And when I worked as a banker at my local Wells Fargo, I made $19.50.”

“Let’s not shame people who work in fast food!” she added in the caption.

In the comments, many viewers couldn’t believe Yaya’s claim and asked how she made so much.

“32 [doing] what at DQ???” asked a viewer.

Other viewers said people are “sleeping” on how much money fast food workers can make.

“The managers at Dairy Queen made money. People was SLEEP fr,” commented one viewer. In response, Yaya wrote, “I know quite a few fast food execs who rake in over 100,000 a year.”

“One day people will stop sleeping in hospitality jobs. Especially management positions,” commented a second viewer.

One viewer confirmed that fast food jobs pay well, but the pay doesn’t tempt them to return to the industry.

“Fast food pays more, but will I ever work in fast food again? absolutely not,” they wrote.

However, several viewers said that working at a fast-food restaurant for $32 an hour — plus ice cream — would be worth it.

“I would be happy with money and ice cream as always, I would be living a dream,” wrote one user.

“$32 an hour AND ice cream. I’m retiring from there lol,” agreed a second.

The Daily Dot reached out to Yaya via TikTok comment and to Dairy Queen and Wells Fargo via email.
