Former Casa Nueva Vida director convicted after stealing $1.5 million from organization – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) – The former head of a publicly funded nonprofit that operated homeless shelters in Massachusetts has been jailed for a year for stealing $1.5 million from the organization and lying under oath, prosecutors said.

Manuel Duran, 70, was also sentenced on Thursday to four years probation and 250 hours of community service after pleading guilty to theft and perjury related to his time as manager of Casa Nueva Vida, which houses about 150 mostly Spanish-speaking families were more than a dozen locations in Boston and Lawrence, according to prosecutors.

“Manuel Duran’s schemes and his blatant abuse of power resulted in the destruction of a valuable charity and basic services to our state’s most vulnerable residents,” said Attorney General Healey. “We are pleased to be able to give an account of this case.”

In addition, he was ordered to pay damages that have yet to be determined.

An investigation launched after an anonymous tip found Duran rented four properties he owned and one owned by a relative at the shelter. He then signed disclosure forms under oath falsely stating that the organization was not a party to a transaction in which any of its officers, directors or trustees had a material financial interest, authorities said.

In a related civil case in January, Duran agreed to pay $6 million to settle allegations that he had funneled government funds to himself.

The organization’s programs were taken over by another protection group, Heading Home, one of the largest shelter and shelter providers in the Boston area.
