A disabled man claims he was beaten, dragged and verbally abused by a female prison officer after she parked in a disabled parking space.
John Baines drove over 90 miles from his home in Chesterfield, Derbyshire to see his father for the first time since he was imprisoned three months ago.
The 36-year-old parked in the disabled area of HMP Forest Bank in Pendlebury, Greater Manchester, where he said he was soon escorted by the officer.
When he made a comment about her parking in a handicapped space, he claims she reacted violently.
“I’m me, I’ll make a somewhat sarcastic comment: ‘Perks of the job, park where you want,'” he said.
“Then she replies, ‘I park where the hell I want, I do what I please.’ I was just trying to joke a bit, and then that’s all I got.
“I told her I was going to report her and she called me an idiot and a s***. So I told her, “I’m the handicapped idiot, you park in a handicapped spot.”
Mr Baines, who needs a walking stick after being stabbed in 2013, said he took a picture of the woman’s vehicle before returning to his car, where he sat with the door open.
He said he was then approached by the woman, who asked him to give up his phone.
When he refused, he claimed he was hit “on the left and then the right side” of his face.
“She tried to pull my phone off me, I tried to get to the passenger side of my car to get away from her but she grabbed my throat and pulled me out of the car,” he said.
Mr Baines said the ordeal left him so devastated that he had to call a friend in Chesterfield to pick him up. He’s afraid to go outside now.
“After I was stabbed, I don’t go out in public as much, but I went to jail because I thought it was safe. It’s supposed to be a safe area,’ he said.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed a 27-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of joint assault and assault at the scene.
She was released amid inquiries, with a spokesman adding that the victim’s injuries were “not serious”.
A spokesman for HMP Forest Bank said: “We are aware of an allegation against one of our prison officers and are cooperating with the police investigation. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.’
