FORD has unveiled its all-electric E-Transit Custom as part of plans to have five electric vans by 2024.
The vans are part of a broader pledge to phase out engines on all European models by 2035.
Ford has already shown its larger electric e-transit van, and we’ve already driven it.
The Custom shares many of the same impressive features, but surpasses the range of the larger, heavier E-Transit by 40 miles. A 236-mile drive is possible here.
Ford simultaneously launched what it calls the Ford Pro.
It’s the name of a new dedicated service for Transit customers that includes sales, conversion, financing, maintenance, smart charging and software.
You can also have a Ford Pro wallbox at home or work, which will do the normal charging – but it’ll also calculate how much juice is going into the work van, so you’ll be reimbursed accordingly.
Like the larger E-Transit, the Custom comes with a fast DC charge, with a charge to 80% taking around half an hour.
It also features the same 2.3kW sockets in the cab and cargo area to power implements and lighting.
For example, Ford calculates that an hour with a table saw eats up only about three miles of range.
And if you do get carried away, the E-Transit Custom can flash its lights and honk if you’re using more juice than it takes to get you home to the charger.
Hans Schep, General Manager of Ford Pro Europe, said: “This is a turning point for commercial vehicle operators in Europe and another extremely significant realization of our Ford Pro ambitions.
“Europe’s best-selling van has just gone fully electric and – aided by our unique Ford Pro one-stop shop for productivity-enhancing services – the operational benefits this company will bring across Europe cannot be overstated.”
Ford will reveal how much the E-Transit Custom will cost in September, but we can have a decent guess now.
The E-Transit starts at around £45,000, which is a fair bit more than a diesel Transit but competitively priced for electric vans.
Expect this smaller custom van to start at around £40,000 and also look cheaper than most alternatives.
Production of the E-Transit Custom will start in the second half of 2023.
