Florida lawmakers expect DeSantis to sign two laws to prevent school shootings

PARKLAND, FL. – Florida lawmakers expect Gov. Ron DeSantis to sign two new laws focused on improving school safety and student mental health care.

The massacre at a Texas elementary school has brought issues of school safety, mental health and gun control back to the fore.

Florida Rep. Christine Hunschofsky was the mayor of Parkland who responded to the 2018 Valentine’s Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Hunschofsky, D-Parkland, said she was proud of the unanimous support the two bills received earlier this year.

The legislature has passed a bill school security on February 24th, and an invoice to address that mental health of students on March 2nd.

Florida’s School Safety Act (HB1421) requires the development of a family reunification plan, emergency drills with law enforcement, incident reporting, and more crisis intervention and awareness training.

The invoice (HB1421) also extends the MSD Commission’s powers to oversee the implementation of the legislation until July 1, 2026. It also calls on the country’s Education Commissioner to enforce the new measures.

“The DOE’s (The Department of Education) improvements to this bill will give it the horsepower,” said Wayne Black, a school safety advisor.

Student Mental Health Bill (HB899) requires charter schools to comply with reporting requirements for involuntary exam data and for the Department of Children and Families to use the data.

State law will also require schools to provide information about additional behavioral health services and resources for students and their families. Each district must hire a mental health coordinator.

If approved by DeSantis, the bills will go into effect in July.
