Florida airports are expected to set records during the holiday

MIAMI – Leisure travel in 2022 is expected to match the busiest pre-pandemic seasons at Miami International and Fort Lauderdale Airport, which will pass through millions of travelers over the next two weeks.

2.5 million passengers are expected to make their way through MIA, up from the airport’s previous record last year, officials said.

Officials are urging travelers to get to the airport early as 1.6 million are expected to use Fort Lauderdale Airport, a 13 percent increase from 2021.

Nationwide travel experts expect 102 million Americans will travel by air and land.

And with a winter storm expected to sweep through parts of the country, some airlines are reporting cancellations and delays in advance.

If you’re trying to weather the storm, you can ask your airline for a free travel waiver so you can reschedule your existing flight.

“You need to make sure you check with the airline you fly to see what their specific policies cover,” said Melanie Fish, an Expedia staffer.

If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a refund if you decide not to take a rescheduled flight.

Experts also urge travelers to look at the rebooking policy as not every airline offers the option.

“Automation is your friend,” Fish said. “Use the apps or website you booked your trip on and see your rebooking options. You can call but the wait will be long.”

If your cancellation is unrelated to the weather, your right to travel entitles you to a free hotel and meals.

“In general, airlines are required to issue refunds when they cancel the flight and no reasonable alternatives are offered,” Fish said. “Airlines want to help you get where you need to go. So they will work with you, especially this week.”

Experts advise customers to arrive 2 hours earlier for a domestic flight and 3 hours earlier for an international flight, but as Christmas approaches, many say they should plan ahead and get there as early as possible.
