A 12-year-old boy was fishing with his mother when his lure caught a much larger fish than he expected.

Campbell Keenan was using tuna on his hook and was shocked to find an 11-foot great white shark surfacing with fishing line out of its mouth.

“I was a little nervous — I don’t know if I want to compete against a shark,” Campbell told CBS News. “But it really upset me.”

Campbell of Massachusetts lured the estimated 700-pound shark during a fishing trip in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Tuesday. With some help from crew members, he wrestled with the Apex Predator for 45 minutes.

“They gave me the bar and I just started cranking,” Campbell said.

A video clip shows the apex predator swimming alongside the boat.

‘That’s 100 percent a goddamn shark!’ you hear someone scream.

A crew member shouted that it was “a massive great white shark” and “like the most desirable fish in the ocean.”

Crew members said it was a breeze for Campbell to do his best to reel in the beast and mount it on his wall as a prize.

But Campbell and his mother instead chose to tag the shark and release it back into the ocean for researchers to follow and learn from.

Great white sharks are an “endangered” species and as such it is illegal to capture and keep them in the US.

It wasn’t the only encounter with sharks while fishing in recent years.

In April 2021, a 16-year-old boy caught a 450-pound mako shark on a fishing trip in Destin, Florida and took it home for dinner.

“I fought it for about an hour and that’s when we knew it was the real deal, we were in for a long fight,” said Thomas Thompson. “It was pretty crazy, you definitely didn’t expect that.”

A New York City shark captain, Tom LaCognata, said he caught great white sharks measuring 6 to 7 feet long off Long Island last summer.

“We could get (her) close to the boat and just cut the line,” LaCognata told the New York Post. “You don’t want to get too close to your teeth.”
