He said: “First of all, I would like to express my sincere condolences to Trei’s family.
“They are assisted by specialized officers and a dedicated team of detectives will do everything possible to bring whoever was responsible for this tragic murder to justice.
‘Our investigation has revealed that Trei was stabbed near the Color Factory nightclub in Queen’s Yard, just off White Post Lane in Hackney Wick.
“There was still a lot going on in this area between 4 and 4.30 on Saturday morning. Were you there? Have you witnessed some kind of fight or confrontation? Have you seen or heard anything suspicious?
“Officials have already spoken to a number of people who have been in the area and I am grateful to them for their support. But there will be others who saw or heard something, and I need those people to come forward and talk to the detectives.
At this early stage there were no arrests.
The second man, 24 years old, was discharged from the hospital.
Matt Kruzynski, who works at a bar that was shut down during the investigation, said he was shocked to hear about the incident in “the family-friendly space,” which has changed “a lot” for the better in recent years.
Alongside the police cordon on White Post Lane, he said: “Hackney Wick is my local drinking spot, I spend a lot of time here.
“I have always felt very safe here. Nothing like this has ever happened to me while I was working at Hackney Wick.
“The area has a bad reputation for how it used to be, but it has changed a lot.
“Even at 1 or 2 in the morning after work, I was never afraid to go home alone.
“This is a very family friendly area. It’s normal for people to be pushing strollers or walking their dogs at midnight.”
Anyone with information or witnesses who have yet to speak to police are urged to call 101, ref 1222/11feb. To remain anonymous, please contact the independent charity Crimestoppers.
